James O’Connell and Anna Hennessy

James O'Connell was born about 1800. He is listed as 68 years old on his death certificate dated the 3rd of June 1868 and claims he is aged 40 in the census taken on 7 June 1841.[1] The 1841 census was filled in by the householders themselves and recorded not only the name and age of each occupant but the dates of all their marriages as well. It was also used to determine age when the old age pension was introduced in 1909. It states that Anna was married three times in total, 1820, 1824 and 1836. Her first husband’s name was James Casey, with whom she had a son:

Her second husband was William Griffin with whom she had:

Finally Anna married James O'Connell. Their children were:

  • Frances O’Connell of Lahardane, bt. 16 Jul 1837, Ballybunion. p: James O’Connell, Hanora Hennessy. sp: Morgan O’Connell, Joanna Hennessy.

  • Michael O’Connell of Lahardan, bt. 1 Aug 1839, Ballybunion. p: James O’Connell, Ann Hennessy. sp: Patrick Griffen, Ann Hennessy.

  • Edward O’Connell of Lahardan, (Baptismal name Edmundus.) bt. 27 Sep 1840, Ballybunion. p: James O’Connell, Ann Hennessy. sp: Thomas Lynch, Janet O’Connell.

  • Naming patterns would suggest an Elizabeth fits in here.

  • James O’Connell of Lahardane, bt. 17 Feb 1844, Ballybunion. p: James O’Connell, Anna Hennessy. sp: John Hayes, Juliana Stack.

  • Anna O’Connell (Sr. Mary Brendan), b.c. 1845 p: James O’Connell, Anna Hennessy. d. 4 Nov 1904.

  • John O’Connell of Lahardan, (Baptismal name Morgan) bt. 19 Jul 1847, Ballybunion. p: James O’Connell, Anne Hennessy. sp: John O’Connell, Julia Langford.

Griffith’s Valuation, of 1851[2] in Lahardane, lists James O'Connell as a major representative of the owner, John Leslie Gun. John Leslie Gun of Ballybunion was the grandson of George Gun of Carrigafoile Castle and therefore a cousin to the O’Connells and Raymonds of Ballyegan and Riversdale.

James death record says he died on the 3rd of June 1868, aged 68, at Lahardane[3] of bronchitis and John O'Connell was present. Anna died on the 28th of February 1881[4] when she was about 75 and living in Market Street, Listowel. Her death certificate names her as Anna O’Connell, female, a farmer’s widow, that she died of acute bronchitis, 8 days, and that James Horgan was present at her death.
